The importance of a parenting evaluation (often called a "custody evaluation") cannot be overstated. This evaluation is a critical part of the court's child custody and visitation determination. Obviously, an evaluation that will help determine your custody and visitation rights to your children is extremely important.

It is important to be prepared for this evaluation. At Payne & Associates, PLLC, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, we have helped many clients throughout the Triad area in all types of family law and divorce-related matters, including parental examinations. Our lawyers can help you get prepared and do your best at the evaluation.

Your Parental Evaluation

A parental evaluation involves a visit from a psychologist or other mental health professional who will investigate your family to make custody recommendations.

You can do your best during the parenting evaluation by:

  • Be honest: Do not lie at all in the interviews, questionnaires or at any other point of the evaluation.
  • Avoid being combative or overly emotional: If you talk badly about your ex or use the evaluation as a chance to show how bad your ex is, it just looks bad. For an evaluator who is looking for potential reasons to minimize your parenting time, you want to come across as fair, reasonable, and emotionally stable.
  • Be prepared: The parent who has all of the financial records, family history and other important documents prepared ahead of time has a tremendous advantage during the parental examination. Work with one of our experienced attorneys to further discuss how you can be best prepared for your parental examination.

"A parental evaluation can be a stressful time, with a lot at stake. Don't worry. Our lawyers have been through this process many times, and we can help you be prepared and present well."
